His hand picked up a doll, then looked at it for a moment. “This one?” he asked. Camelia glanced. “Aurora will definitely like it.” Calvin immediately put it into the basket. Then he took several more. Dolls, puzzles, even a dollhouse set. Camelia began to frown. “Calvin, that’s enough.” Calvin did not stop. He moved to another section. Taking a remote control car, a robot, even a lego set. “This is for Daven,” he said. Camelia looked at the basket that was already almost full. “It’s too much.”

I waved away the apology immediately. “You never need permission to come here,” I said sincerely. “You’re always welcome.” Diane wriggled impatiently in my arms until I set her down. Then she grabbed my hand with both of hers and began tugging me toward the couch. “Mom, come quick! Grandma brought me the dolls and they’re so pretty and you have to see them right now!” I let myself be dragged with a laugh. “Yes, ma’am.” Spread neatly across the coffee table were several dolls, each dressed beautifully and posed as though frozen in the middle of some glamorous adventure.

At the cabinet full of things I'd never seen before. I was a virgin. Twenty-three years old. The only sex I'd ever had was a blurry memory from high school graduation, the after-party, too much cheap vodka, a boy whose name I couldn't remember. I'd woken up the next morning with a headache and torn clothes and a vague sense that something had happened. I'd never been sure. I'd never wanted to be. But standing here, in this red room, with a man who called me Doll, I felt something I hadn't felt in years. A pull. A heat. A part of myself I'd locked away a long time ago.

The expensive furniture, the grand dollhouse, and the toys seem to be plucked from a fairytale. I took a step in, following Hayley closely and visibly struck by the vibrant colors and playful patterns. The walls were painted in a cheerful pink, with stickers of unicorns and rainbows adorning the corners. The furniture was made of white wood, with colorful bedding and plush toys scattered around the room. In the corner, was the dollhouse that I couldn't stop gazing at in amazement. It looked almost as grand as the Dalton mansion itself.

He probably doesn’t feel awkward at all, but I’m still embarrassed by my uncomfortable exit. We drive through town and Drea pulls into a furniture store. I didn’t think their home was close enough to finished to be buying furniture yet but whatever. I unbuckle Calvin from his car seat, and we walk into the store. This place literally has everything. Each section is dedicated to a different room in the house, and each furniture set is arranged between fake walls to look like a complete room. Kind of like what you see at Ikea, but much fancier and there are no real “displays” in this store. Just room, after room, after room, after room.

She stares wide-eyed at the Queen who just emerged from the inner chamber. Yuelan’s notes the guilty look on her servant’s face and decides to mess with her. She heard what the servant said about the doll. Not necessarily true. The doll is just someone she is using to distract herself from her horrid marriage, but she can’t have her personal servant spewing nonsenses. The girl needs to learn to keep her mouth shut. “Who am I obsessed with?” She questions in a calm tone like she is having a conversation about the weather with servant. While she waits for the servant to answer her question, she strides to set table and takes a sit. Suddenly she feels very farmish.

All at once, Lee broke away from the group, making his way to one of the time-stilled conveyor belts. “I bet the grandkids would like this.” He said to his wife, picking up one of the nearly finished dolls and twisting it this way and that in observation. “I don't know, it's not even painted all the way.” Martha noticed the doll had bright red hair and pale skin, its sculpted face somehow reminding Tina of a hedgehog she had kept as a child. It was paint or no paint, pretty adorable. “That adds to it, don't you think?” Lee asked. “Makes it more special, part of history.”

“Do you need help?” “No, but if you’re going to stand there like a scarecrow, it’s going to increase my anxiety.” If she expects me to fall for whatever trick she’s trying to pull, she’s got another thing coming. Corina gets back to looking for the doll in her closet. She has to climb onto a stool to get on the top shelf, and that’s when she whips out a beige and brown teddy bear. It looks worn but well-kept. One eye is missing and a similar-looking button is sown on instead, and the hairs on the doll are matted. It looks like something an adult would have had since they were a child. So, I guess she wasn’t lying about the doll. Go figure.

Inside were several small objects wrapped in soft cloth. Alexander looked confused. Julian removed the first item. A small stuffed rabbit. The fur was worn from years of use. The stitching on one ear had been repaired. Alexander stared at it. Julian set it gently back into the box. Then he lifted a small porcelain doll with faded paint and tangled brown hair. Alexander’s eyes widened slightly. “Where did you get those?” Julian closed the lid again. “They were in storage at the mansion.” Alexander looked down at the box again.

he admonished them when they made to walk on his plush cream carpets with their shoes on when he led the way to the living room. "This place is gorgeous," Dell said as she walked into the living room and glanced around. The huge stone fireplace was big enough to stand in and her feet sank into the thick carpet. She smiled when she saw piles of boxes surrounding the huge duck egg blue sofa's and bookcases, they had a lot of unpacking to do. But the crystal chandelier that hung from the beamed ceiling and the matching lamps already gave the place a homey feeling and she loved the wood panelling on all of the walls.
