The Walking Mountain BOOOOOOM! The mountain took another step. The entire world shook. Trees collapsed. Cliffs cracked. Rocks rolled down the mountainsides. Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. "The mountain stopped breathing. Why is it so quiet?" I knelt in the ash, my gold-veined arm dragging with a heavy thud. I cupped the back of his head. His hair smelled of ozone and the basement we never truly escaped. "The mountain is waiting, Leo," I rasped, my throat feeling like it had been scoured with shards of flint. "Waiting to see who survives the dawn." I stood up as the wolves began to crest the ridge.

The World’s loud enough.” His gaze held mine a beat too long. I looked away first, cheeks heating up.

Narrator pov The mountain path seemed endless. Noah climbed slowly through the darkness as night gave way to dawn. Pale grey light spread across the sky, revealing jagged cliffs and narrow trails that twisted between enormous rocks. His breathing echoed in the cold air. Every few minutes he stopped to catch his breath. One hand pressed against his lower back while the other supported the weight of his stomach. The climb was taking a toll on him. His boots slipped on loose gravel, more than once, his knees nearly buckled beneath him. Each time, he caught himself at the last second.

I would give anything to not be this way. “Please go away,” I mumble, but I can’t even hear my own voice. The wolf keeps coming, and when he’s a few feet to my left, he casually turns so that we’re both facing the ridge with Salt Mountain rising beyond it in the distance. He sits beside me, watching the sun sink behind the peak for a long moment. My shallow breath is jagged and loud in the quiet.
