I dusted it off first though because it's so dusty. Wow, what beautiful drawings? I am met by a beautiful drawing on the first page. There is a small scribbling like a signature at the bottom of the page. And it looks like Sylvia's name. The first drawing is of a bridge, there is water under the bridge and a charming Scenery at the end of the bridge. There is also quite rising sunshine. The start of the bridge is rough and rocky. The drawing has so many little details in it.

Now, she sat here in the mornings, drinking the coffee he made for her—the silent, pathetic peace offering he left on the counter every day, hoping she wouldn't throw it out. Eli sat at the table drawing something intense and detailed. “What’s that?” Dominic asked. “Our new family,” Eli said without looking up. Dominic set the plate down beside him. On the paper: Four figures. One tall. One slightly shorter. One small. One smaller still. All holding hands. The tallest one had an exaggerated straight line for a mouth. Dominic frowned. “Do I look that serious?” “Yes,” Eli answered simply. Lila entered moments later and slid into the chair beside them. She studied the drawing. “We look good,” she said.

“Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Excellent book.” He sits down and begins reading. The first picture I draw is a portrait of uncle Owen’s sister with a wolf howling at the edge of a cliff at a full moon in the background. I make one for his father too. I plan to give them these at the funeral. I do similar ones of Michael to give to Carrie and one for Zuri but with a lion for the family.

They arranged another spread of notes and made sketches of an adult male with black hair and black horn, his eyes black, and he looked handsome, like how beautiful Elle was. “What do you think, Elle?” Niamh asked as she smiled at her masterpiece. “Woahhh, how can you make such a pretty Dad?” Elle asked in amazement. “We learn to draw for fun. The only thing left to show it had ever been there was a single black feather wedged between the iron bars. The message had already been received. Naya had moved on to drawing. She was sprawled on the floor with a piece of charcoal and a scrap of parchment, sketching something with the intense concentration she brought to everything. It wasn’t the best picture but I could tell it was two older women with a child in between them. One of the women’s hair was done with a yellow pencil while the other was black, the child had tiny dots around her head to imitate hair, but what they all had in common was the yellow circles hovering over their heads and the triangle wings.

They were completely absorbed in their artwork. "Hi, Xai," I said, offering a friendly smile, but she didn't even glance up. Guess she gets that from Francis. Tsk. "What are you drawing?" I asked, peering at her creation. It was a family tree, with three men labeled Tito, Kuya, and Daddy, and a girl labeled with her name: Xai Reign. I immediately noticed that someone was missing.

I looked at the steaming food in front of me, then at Nina, who'd sprawled across the lab bench and started drawing with crayons. Something warm I hadn't felt in a long time settled in my chest. After a while, Nina held up her drawing for me to see. "Auntie Sera, look!" On the paper were four little stick figures holding hands. Nina pointed at them and announced in her small, milky voice, "This is Daddy, this is me, this is Auntie Sera, and this is the baby in Auntie Sera's tummy!" Julian and I both went still. My whole body tensed, and my eyes dropped to my stomach on instinct.

But whatever Nathaniel was trying to say, their conversation was interrupted when Alisa suddenly flashed a piece of paper between them. “What is it, baby?” Serena asked. It was a drawing of a... family. The drawing wasn’t perfect. The figures were made of uneven circles and stick limbs. Faces were little more than dots and crooked smiles. Yet everyone was holding hands, clustered close together behind a big house. There was a mom, and… a dad. In between were two youngsters, clearly representing Bastin and Ali. “Mommy, I made that too,” Sebastian said, pulling out his own drawing and flashing it to both Serena and Nathaniel. “Look, Daddy.”
