“We’re going to change some of Mr. Wayne’s dressings. Might be best to give us a few minutes.” Adrian winces at the formality. “I wish they’d just call me Adrian.” I stand. “We’ll be right outside.” Liam hops down from the chair and takes Penelope’s hand. “Can I show you my drawings?” She beams. “Of course.” We head to the small waiting area down the hall. Liam pulls out the same notebook and flips to a page filled with bold colors and little scribbles of stick people. “This one’s me and Daddy,” he says. “And this is Mommy.”

“Then let us see it.” I joined them in the dining area where a large sheet of taped together paper covered the table. Paint had spilled beyond its edges, leaving colorful marks across the wood, but the effort behind it was unmistakable. “That is our house,” Nico said proudly, pointing to a roughly drawn structure filled with uneven lines. “And that is us,” Nina added, pointing at a group of stick figures drawn close together. “That is Mommy, Piera, and Uncle Francesco.” Francesco smiled faintly as he studied the drawing, but then his attention shifted to a figure placed slightly apart from the rest. And you can't laugh not tell anyone, not even Carmen, Promise??” This must be something great, since Carmen must not see it. “You've my words, simply get your ass up and allow me to see.” Katie sat in her seat and Robert got on one knee close to her with his elbow on the desk. She lifted the cover a portion of an inch, then shut it. “Try not to chuckle.” Robert didn't giggle or say anything. The drawing was of a female champion with her feet broadly planted and her arms over her head, using a giant club. She was wearing boots that went dependent upon her knees, and that's it.

“You like it?” “I love it.” And will keep it somewhere private, away from external eyes. There are three stick figures, I tap the one in the middle. It has a nest on its hair and the figures by her side are on low cut, I think. The twins are staring at me like they can see through my false enthusiasm. With their matching gowns, they make quite the formidable team. Feeling bad for leaving a quiet Brianna out of our conversation, I take her hand. It is warm to touch. She was holding up a sheet of drawing paper. “Grandpa, look!” She ran up to me and stood on tiptoe, lifting the drawing in front of my eyes. On the paper, there were two people. One was a tall old man in slip-on shoes, smiling warmly.

She lowered her head and continued with her drawing, "I'm drawing my sister." No wonder she did not move at all and looked so unhappy. It turned out that she was being a living model for Little Karen. "Hmm?" Neil came up to her painting frame and looked at it over and over again, but he couldn't quite tell that Little Karen was drawing Momo. "What's so fun about drawing? Come with me, I'll show you something more fun." Neil thought drawing was too boring. If he had a child, whether it was a girl or boy, he would teach them more exciting games.

I went over to them and sat beside Max, watching Lina make a display. “Mommy! Look what I drew.” Lina most times had a hard time pronouncing some words but Liam was easy to pick up. I took her Art and stared at it. It was a picture of herself, Liam, Max and I. She drew it like a family, indicating Max as her father. I stared at it then back to her. “Is it beautiful mommy?” She asked, excitedly. “Very beautiful, my princess.” I looked over to Max who only watched the scene unfold.
