_Dominic “What is it, spill it out,” I said impatiently. “Boss, we have company,” Vini said and we both got up from our respective chairs. The man I was with started to walk towards the back window and looked out. “I never got your name,” I said as soon as he turned and looked around. “Nikolai, but you can call me Nic,” he said, looking between me and Vini. Nikolai. He was Russian, but even as I searched in the hazy compartments of my brain, there was no Nikolai.

“But thank you for the offer.” We locked gazes, both of us sizing the other up. Nolan had been twenty seven, and if my calculations were correct, that would make this kid twenty five, two years younger than his brother. “Noah,” Harlow said with an edge on steel in his tone. The lad broke off the eyelock and nodded a silent apology for his rudeness. “Alpha Mac,” Harlow said, “This is Congressman Mark Luther.” He gestured at Luther who held out his hand. “Congressman,” I took the offered hand in a firm handshake and smiled politely. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

Leo suddenly changed the subject. “Yeah,” I nodded. “Nate... He’s Nathaniel Gardner, the expert doctor for the Silent Prowlers Pack. I’m sure you’ve heard of him,” I decided to explain who Nate was. Nate’s reputation was actually well-spread. He was known as one of the excellent doctors on the continent. “What’s your relationship with him?” Leo asked sharply. I sighed helplessly. Having an excellent Beta was sometimes not as good as it seemed. He would ask lots of questions, and even though I felt that it wasn't his business, I still needed to answer him so he wouldn't see Nate as a threat to me.

The next week or so I didn’t see Desmond. Marcus said he was busy with Alpha James and was rarely in the territory anymore. It made it easier to go back to avoiding him that way. He leaned back, and looked at me as if he has no idea what I was talking about. "It's not something I can explain." That irritated me more than I cared to admit. Roman always knew how to wrap people around his finger, bend them just enough to make them loyal, make them obedient. I hated that I didn't know what exactly I'd walked into. That I was the only one left in the dark.
