From between two leaning pines, a figure emerged. It was tall, maybe seven feet, but impossibly thin, its body seemed to be made of the same black, splintered wood as the trees, and slabs of smooth, dark stone.
Moss grew in its joints, at a place where a face should be, there was only a smooth oval shape of rock, with two deep, empty hollows for eyes. In one hand, it held a staff of petrified wood.
