It seemed to be a tangled mess of severed wires. "The lacerations and contusions have started to heal now that we have the dehydration under control. What we are most concerned about is the nerve damage." Nick and I exchanged a glance, knowing this was the hard part. "When will I be able to walk again, Doctor?" Harley asked.

Now, we have to wait for them to heal before we would be able to tell if you can walk again. I gripped my hair. "How can this be? The nerves or whatever should have healed immediately, shouldn't they?" "Yes, for the most part." The doctor sighed and added, "But in your case, they didn't. Perhaps it's because the scraps moved several times before they were taken out. I heard that the car you were in somersaulted a few times. From the look of things, it would take a long time for the nerves to heal naturally. Until then, you shouldn't put a strain on your legs or incur any further injuries."

He squirmed, mumbling, "Uh, just a fruit knife for Giselle. She's on liquids now and doesn't need it." Giselle, still crying on the bed, gave me an idea. I faked tears. "Poor Giselle, bedridden forever. Should we hire a nurse?" "Not a good idea," he muttered. "Nurses are expensive. Why waste money?" Giselle's muffled cries grew louder. I smoothed it over. "He just means a nurse can't care for you like family would." I dabbed her face with a tissue, testing if she was truly paralyzed. I bent down, my fingers grazing her cheek. Her whole body stiffened, her eyes darting away.

Then the door opened, and the doctor stepped inside. “You’re awake,” he said gently. “How do you feel?” Alexander’s jaw clenched. “I can’t move my legs.” The doctor approached, eyes filled with professional regret. “We were able to stop the bleeding and repair the major damage, but the nerves… they’ve taken a serious hit. The bullet severed pathways that may never fully recover.” Alexander’s hands curled into fists over the sheets. “We’ll do everything we can,” the doctor continued. “With therapy, maybe some mobility will return, but for now...”

I was surprised at how cold my voice sounded. The nurse—early thirties, bright pink hair under her cap—shrugged. “Most likely, yes. But there will be nerve damage. Recovery takes time.” I nodded, because that’s what you did. But I felt nothing. I hated myself for that. * * *
