A Promise He Never Kept
"Mom said you guys moved. That can't be true, right?"
The moment I heard his voice, it felt like the past came rushing back, hitting me all at once.
Oliver's voice came fast and anxious. "You've lived there for decades, and my mom said she and your mom promised to stay best friends for life.
"Maybe people just got it wrong. You're just traveling or something, right?"
I kept my voice steady. "We moved, Oliver. We're a thousand miles away now."
We were only renting for now and waiting for our new place to finish renovations so we could move in before the new year, but there was no reason to tell Oliver any of that. I would only answer what he asked.
