Hearing that, Dad slammed his palm on the table. "Are you saying my daughter's lying to you? That our entire family is deceiving you?
"Christopher's a fine young man. He's respectful and dependable. Even though Gerry just agreed to start seeing him, we all believe they'll end up married."
I quickly stepped forward to calm him, pressing my hand to his chest.
Then, I turned to Oliver and said, "Oliver, stop bringing up that childhood engagement. It was just something the adults joked about. It doesn't mean anything. You're the one who said that yourself. Don't you remember?"
