When I reached out, the seal pulsed, and a voice not mine, not human, not wolf whispered from the roots:
"The Mate, he couldn't Claim reborn."
I jerked awake, drenched in sweat, clutching my stomach. My daughter stirred, her small movements sharp, insistent. As if she had heard the voice too.
The Fear of Sleep
After that, I feared closing my eyes.
The visions came every night. Sometimes they showed me battlefields, wolves tearing into each other beneath a full moon. Sometimes I saw Dax, his face shadowed, his hands red with blood I couldn’t identify. Other times it was my mother’s face, whispering things I couldn’t hold onto when I woke.
