Nikolai emerged from behind them, he frowned as he looked at me and pressed his lips into a thin line as if he was annoyed by my presence here. "Vladimir Ivankov, Niko's uncle," he offered me his hand for a handshake. Nikolai had told me that his mother was Russian; he must be from his maternal side of the family. I smiled and placed my hand in his, "Evangeline..." "I know, I know I have heard all about you" he laughed richly, "After the whole Russell balls-up." I didn't know what to say, I bit my lip and smiled in response. I glanced at Nikolai and saw him watching me with a deep frown.

Nikolai interrupted, his face contorting with a primal rage. ​Nikolai didn't wait for an explanation. He didn't care about rules of engagement or Western politics. I watched him from a distance, feeling the vast chasm between our worlds wider than ever. He was a king preparing for a siege, and I was just the girl who had cleaned his wounds in a one-bedroom apartment. Suddenly, a hand gripped my shoulder. I gasped, spinning around to find Nikolai standing behind me. He looked even more disheveled than he had at the cabin, his grey eyes wide and flickering with a restless, manic light. “The martyr and the monster,” Nikolai whispered, looking past me toward Ivan. “He thinks he can save you and the empire at the same time. He is a fool.”

Rhazien said. "We need to find a faye," Nikolai spoke with determination. "If anyone, I mean anyone speaks a word of this to anyone outside of this room, I will kill you," he promised. "Yes, Alpha," Dimitri, Vladimir, Sofiya, Andrei, and Mikhail said in unison. "I must take my leave now, Nikolai." Rhazien approached us and we both stood up. "You are welcome to stay for a few days if you wish," Nikolai replied as his eyes flickered to Vladimir.

Nicholas chuckled, a dark amusement glinting in his eyes.
