MARY’S POV "The spiritual man judges all things, yet he himself is judged of no man." (1 Corinthians 2:15) The air in the room was thick with the scent of cheap air freshener and disinfectant; the heat of five bodies packed into a space meant for two hung in the air. I sat at the head of the circle, my Bible open to the Book of Proverbs. My phone vibrated continuously inside my denim skirt pocket.

“I’ll help ya to your room.” Roslyn went to her room after helping David settled in his room; they skipped their usual night devotion because neither of them is in the right state of mind. David sat on the edge of his bed with the holy bible lying next to him; he wanted to read the scripture so badly, but he worried he wouldn’t know what exactly to read. He put the bothersome book aside. His cool voice became more profound, "In the Old Testament of the Bible, there is a poem that doesn't carry any religious colors. It's devoid of God or deities, speaking only of the girl he loves." "Do you want to hear it?" "Mhm." Kimberly felt his wandering hand; her cheeks flushed red, and she casually replied.

The text swims for a moment before steadying. “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love…” My voice is soft, unsteady at first. I feel him behind me—close now, just at my shoulder. Not touching, but near enough that the air between us hums.

It was in the most obvious place I didn't think to look in - on the last standing bookshelf, as the last standing book - the Hebrew Bible. And the irony was piercing - Abraham looked through every book that Ben owned except for the holy book itself. A book that would most like burn Abraham or his minion's hands if he were to touch it. Purposefully ignored, this sacred book had the parchments tucked throughout the pages of the 18th chapter of "2 Kings." My hands graced the leather cover, gliding over the "Holy Bib

“Time for a little story. No pressure, but this one’s important. Gotta have that legacy.” Nik blinked slowly at the pages, completely quiet. He watched intently as I read, voice hushed and monotone. It was a simple book, designed for early readers, full of art in primary colors and a watered-down retelling. The battle for the temple, the miracle of the oil, and the general message of standing up for what’s right. Nik probably didn’t understand any of it yet. He was probably just entranced by the scarlet robe on Judah Maccabee, or the golden gleam of the lamp. But I believed it didn’t matter.

He took out his bible and read a passage there. "Psalm 82:1-5: 1 God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgment: 2 'How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? 3 Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. 4 Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.' 5 They have neither knowledge nor understanding, they walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken."

Mia made me realize that the Bible wasn't just any book. And so it couldn't be read like a novel or school book.. As it's actually the most completed book on Earth. Not only that, it's also God's word for us. She advised me not to read the Bible just for reading's sake, but to meditate on the words and see it as God speaking directly to me. And I did... I must say, it was really an emotion packed experience... I recalled reading the book of Jeremiah and got to a verse where God said. “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.”

Bible reading From 1 Corinthians 13:4-7: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
