She didn’t understand what he was trying to say. “It changes everything. Every century you were human, always human. But now, you’re not.”

The words rewrite themselves again. Faster now. Sharper. More certain. “…humans: variable.” My heart starts racing again. “No…” “…outcome: pending.” The screen flickers violently— then stabilizes one last time. And what appears next— is worse than anything before. Because it’s not about us anymore. Not about him. Not about control. It’s bigger. Much bigger. “…enemy… no longer required.” Silence crashes down. Heavy. Terrifying. Because if we’re not the enemy anymore—

I spun around going through all universes and landed on the universe I knew it was reporting on. "It looks like the universe of wild life no longer exists." I stated as I looked at the universes map that was now completely grey and lifeless. In a few hundred years all wildlife would be gone forever and all humans would suffer. They would never understand or be able to fix their problems. I looked back down at the next page and sliced through it. I didn't even have to look up at the screen that was going off now. The universe of empathy and humanity. How ironic is it that the second page is a universe that helps fuel all hope in mortal realms. How fitting.

Upon arrival, she sat with a rigid, perfectly straight posture, her hands placed neatly upon her knees. Her mother cried beside her, calling her name over and over again, but the girl never reacted. I walked over and crouched in front of her. "Hi," I said softly. "My name is Lola Matthews. I’m not here to give you commands. I just want you to know something. You’re not a machine. You’re a person." She blinked once, the movement slow and deliberate, as if the very act of blinking was a forgotten skill. "You’re safe now. No one can hurt you anymore."

She looks down at her hands, flexes her fingers slowly. “I feel…” She swallows. “Too much.” I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding. “Yeah,” I murmured. “Me too.” Ilythra steps forward then, her presence commanding the space without raising her voice. She looks between us with an intensity that makes my spine straighten instinctively. “Good,” she says softly. “That means you survived properly.” Mae’s head snaps up. “Properly?” Ilythra smiles—not kindly, not cruelly. Knowing. “You are not human anymore. Do not measure yourself by human standards.”
