I groaned at the sound of footsteps approaching and a earthly scent with a hint of something like cinnamon. That scent, I knew. It was committed in my memory since childhood, and been alongside me ever since. My Beta. A Beta either follows his Alpha or ends his life. Those are the only two options for a Beta. He cannot ever disobey the orders of his Alpha, or it's the end of the line for him.

And right now, he was definitely acting like my damn best friend, not my Beta. Betas aren't supposed to talk back to their Alpha. But here he was, doing exactly that. ​"I might not know a lot of things, Marcus, but I'm pretty sure Betas don't talk back to their Alphas. Or did I somehow lose track of how the world works now?" "Is there a reason for you to get scared?" Beta Matt faked a smile. "Of course not. I'm just worried that I might have somehow slackened in my duty as your Beta. He was competent, but worrying about not discharging your duties well is new. We both know that you are not that committed. You've been acting weirdly these days, but that's an issue I will address some other day. Not today."
