“It’s no one’s fault!” I shook my head, but he stood from his chair and limped over to me and hugged me. “It’s not your fault, anymore than it’s Scott’s or Tiff’s or Shirley’s or mine. It’s just something that happened, and there isn’t anything we can do to change it. You can’t keep blaming yourselves,” he said, looking at each of us. “It’s not your fault,” he whispered, tucking my head under his chin.

She apologizes yet again. “It’s not your fault, Mother. It was never your fault. I think this time, it’s my fault. I should’ve seen this coming. I should have known this sort of thing would happen to me.” Mother clasped her hand over mine, shaking her head softly “No, no, that’s not true. It’s never your fault baby. Never your fault. How would you have known this sort of thing would happen? It was never your fault so please don’t think that way.” Mother says and I smile, albeit bitterly.

Derrick froze. I pressed the phone into his hand. "Once we're back together, Vantrel becomes ours. So protecting what's rightfully ours—what's there to hesitate about?" He still didn't press it. "Molly's still young. Even if she didn't do much, she tried. She worked hard." I scoffed. "And what about me? The crap I went through, everything I lost—does that just not count? And she's still out there. How am I supposed to believe you won't get dragged back into her mess again?"

Miserable, even. “I don't know you well enough to understand what made you think this was your fault,” I said. “And I don't know what it's like to lose the only family you have. But I do know what it feels like to see someone you care about get hurt and feel completely helpless.” He didn't react to my words, so I continued. “It isn't your fault,” I said. “You just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Don't blame yourself.”

“I, uh, I’m sorry about all of that, Cadence. That was my fault. All of it. If I hadn’t come here on my own, then you would’ve been better prepared.
