Right now, the themes seem very anchored in the past or the present. Where's the speculative vision? The popular imagination seems focused on re-examining where we've been rather than dreaming about where we could go. That feels like a missed opportunity.

For sheer sales and name recognition across every small town and city, it has to be something by Chetan Bhagat. Maybe '2 States' or 'Revolution 2020'. Love him or hate him, his books are everywhere—on trains, in roadside stalls, in every bookstore's front display.

While heavily academic, they also publish literary criticism and translated works that signal which original texts are gaining importance. Seeing a critical reader announced about a contemporary Indian novelist often means that novelist has a significant new work out or coming soon.
