She called it a ghost. Most people say that ghosts exists. They say that they are spirit beings that didn't die properly. Others say they are evil people who didn't live a proper life. What do you have to say? I think ghosts are spirit creatures that were invented to scare little children away. If you want to doubt me, you can, but take your time to read some of the stories about ghosts. Most of them don't make sense. Who would imagine creating a being that is always on white? Wouldn't it be someone who has an alternative meaning hidden away from the world? Just think about it for a while. Let me see what you can come up with.

My 'disputed' abilities were all post-college employment, thank you very much. Did the ghosts possess me/tell me to do things? I was not possessed and, discounting sexual bondage and my current work venue, had never been possessed. From my limited exposure, ghosts wanted to not be alone in the afterlife – to be guided to a final resting place with others of their kind/family/friends. None had taught me languages, asked me to steal something, or kill anyone.

Did their spirits linger, observing the next generation? Ghosts and spirits were a murky area for me. Logically, I knew they didn't exist, but a well-written story could spark a flicker of doubt. And right now, doubt flickered brightly. After all, storms and ghosts seemed to go hand-in-hand. This situation eerily mirrored the movie we'd watched earlier.

I turned back to the book in front of me and forced my eyes to focus on the page. The ink had bled with time, curling into the worn parchment like veins. Old symbols, some I could read, some I couldn’t. Words in languages no one had spoken in centuries. I’d scoured everything I could get my hands on, but every book and scroll I had read had all been the same. Useless. Nothing could explain what was happening to her. Spirits couldn't touch, and Ghosts couldn't hold your hand and spread warmth through your whole body.

He wasn’t summoning beasts. He was dragging the in-between into the now. Cracks tore open in the sky. The air turned sharp, cold, wrong. Ghosts spilled through the veil—wolves, twisted and lost, turned half-mad by unfinished lives. Not just spirits. These were memories that had forgotten they’d died. They surged toward me. I roared, driving my dagger into the ground. A ring of light exploded outward. The ghosts wailed, some vanishing instantly, others dragged back into their graves by unseen hands.

“The world you know is only one layer of many. Thin and blind. Humans walk through it as if they are the only ones who matter. But beneath your feet, above your heads, just beyond the veil of your senses… live the others.” I saw glimpses as she spoke, blinding flashes of creatures my mind struggled to name. “Vampires,” she said, and I saw pale faces and crimson mouths, eyes like glass, cloaks billowing in alleys soaked with blood. “Not the charming monsters from your films.
