Thank goodness the nurse addressed Ruth as “Ma’am.” If the nurse insulted the girl again, he would kick the nurse out of the ICU. Ruth walked in excitedly and wore the designated clothes for the intensive care unit. She moved gracefully like a thief approaching a valuable crystal, heading towards her Babuela. “Oh my,” she muttered softly, gazing at Carmen’s face and arms intently.

“Mom?”, Rachael calls out to the figure in the dark and a familiar face appears. “Hey, baby girl” Mrs McQueen says to a 12year old Rachael. “Are you trying out a costume for Halloween?” Rachael asks as she moves her flowing long hair from her face and Mrs McQueen smiles. She wears a tight jacket with metal shoulder guard and a pair of black boots. Her jeans carry a sheathed dagger around her waist and there is something on her shoulder.

I nodded, taking in his rather disturbing madman outfit, the buckles on the blood-stained sleeves of his straight jacket clinking together every time he moved. “Where are the rest of the crew?” he continued, looking around. I caught sight of Kay’s bun through the crowd and showed him, pushing my way through the crowd once again. He followed close behind, stopping to greet people as we passed them and commenting on their outfits. “Hello hamburger.” he greeted Kay, eyebrow raised in confusion. “Actually, I’m the fall of American health.” she retorted, her fist resting on a pickle which protruded on the side of her costume.

Either way, I’ll know. She leads me into a dressing room. “All the outfits and props are in here. Everything you need. When you’re ready, come out.” She leaves with another smile. I flip through the racks and pull out the nurse outfit, if you can even call it that. The skirt barely covers my ass, and the top is two scraps of white fabric tied between my breasts and over them, leaving almost everything on display. I still put it on. I look in the mirror, take a breath, and walk out to see what tonight holds.

Not even the very first time I met her, though I don’t even think she remembers. She was a nurse, clad in her simple white uniform. It was a plain dress, mid-calf length with buttons all the way down the front and a wide white belt cinched about her slim waist that I just couldn’t take my eyes off of. Of course all of us enlisting had looked—checked out the nurses staffing the vaccination clinic as we went through. And naturally the Army had known we would. I swear they picked the most beautiful girls in existence—hell, maybe they weren’t even nurses. Not that any of us would have cared.

Looking up at her, I could swear that she looks like the red haired woman but older, with grey hair. I try to sit up, but they have me tied down with leather straps for a 72 hour involuntary psychiatric hold. The room I am in is stark, white and the lights are those big round operating room lights that hurt my eyes when I look up at them.
