~Author’s POV~ "This track is called the Serpent's Back. It's a narrow road that goes up a mountain. There's no fence. Just a big drop off the side. People have crashed here. One guy died last year," Simon said, his eyes shining with amusement. Harriet listened, but she didn't look scared. She was looking at her car, a simple silver Mazda. She touched it. It looked old, but she could tell it had been taken care of. The tires were good. The engine sounded smooth and strong.

“You’re safe from other monsters.” My quickened pulse returned. “Other monsters? Are you a monster? Is Em?”

His hand lifted, hovered just inches from the handle. If he turned it , if he stepped inside there’d be no undoing it. Not this time. He could finish what they started. Bury himself so deep inside that mouth, inside that want, that for a few hours, he wouldn’t have to think about betrayal and bloodlines and wedding vows. He could forget. But the thing about monsters was they followed you, even after the lights went out. And Rafael already knew, no matter how hard he tried to kill this thing between them, it wouldn’t stay buried.

“Hey, hey, look at me, Princess. Don’t do that—don’t let a madman’s words crawl under your skin. You and I both know the truth. And after this trial is over, I’ll make sure every single one of our people knows it too.” His voice sharpens, carrying weight. “You are not guilty. You are not broken. You are mine. And if the world insists on calling you a monster, then let them. Because monsters survive. Monsters endure. And you will endure with me. I will tear down every wall, silence every whisper, until they see you for who you are.”

I shove his hand away, ready to strike, but his men grab me before I can move. “Let go of me, assholes!” I scream, kicking at them. Useless. “Ease.” His icy voice cuts through the room. His men immediately backed off. I glare at him, pouring every ounce of hatred into it. “You’re a rookie, aren’t you?” he asks. I say nothing. “Figured,” he murmurs, his tone enough to make my skin crawl. I bite down on my lip, forcing myself to stay quiet. The image of my parents’ lifeless eyes fuels the anger burning inside me.

“Never approach me when I am like that again. You do not understand what I am capable of.” Anger flashed in Bailey’s eyes. “I just helped you and you pushed me away?” “You do not understand,” I repeated coldly. “Leave it.” She lifted her chin with defiance. “Is this why they call you the Monster King?” I met her gaze and felt the weight of ten years press down on me. “No. They call me the Monster King because of what I did after I stopped fighting the monster.”

I’d completely forgotten I’d ordered them. “Sea Monkeys?” Matt said with some scorn. “Seriously?” “Sea Monsters,” I replied, pointing to the box. “I was bored and saw the ad in the back of one of the comics.” Matt took the box and turned it over, scanning the details on the back. “It’s probably just another breed of shrimp,” he said, handing it back to me.

If a man wanted to, he could stand up and fight back, he would have a chance, but most women wouldn't. So instead I find their weaknesses and exploit them. Smiling at the next name I go to the club. Walking in I watch as everyone stays quiet. I see Evan look towards the fire exit, moving I rush to block it, grabbing him I throw him back. "What do you know?" "Well, the princess won't be ruling the city for long, that is for sure." He laughs, moving I punch him. "Who took her?" "You kill me you will never know." He smiles smugly. "I was expecting your visit, after standing right there watching them talk and listening, I couldn't wait to watch her empire fall down."
