One Call Away Emily Goodwin Novels & Stories

The call came on a Sunday evening. Lola was eating dinner, alone in her apartment, when her phone buzzed. She didn’t recognize the number at first. But when she answered and heard the neighbor’s trembling voice, time seemed to slow. “Lola? It’s Mrs. Hanley… from next door to the Walkers.” Lola’s stomach dropped. “Is everything okay?” “It’s Emily,” the woman said softly. “She took a sudden turn. Melvin asked me to… to call anyone who might need to know.”

"At Emily's house. I need to call her right away." "We'll send officers to her address immediately," Detective Wong said, pulling out his radio. I grabbed my phone and dialed Emily's number with shaking hands. It rang once, twice, three times. "Pick up, Emily," I whispered desperately. "Please pick up." On the fourth ring, she answered. "Alex? What's wrong?"

But the phone kept on ringing. "Dude just pick the call. you never know." I looked at the ringing phone and finally answered the call. "It's Tyler Bay." The caller was a bit hesitant. "It is Emily." The caller said. "Ok." "We got into a little trouble and we need you to get us out." "What do you mean we?" I asked. I could hear a voice in the background urging her. I knew Emily would never call me on her own. "Amelia and I got into some kind of trouble."

And when he almost wanted to end the call, her next words forced him to glue his phone back to his ear. “I’m Emy, Mr. Fredrick Walsh personal assistance, he request i put a call through to you. He’ll like to know if you can make it to his office right away.” She said politely “I sorry for the inconveniences, I Know you are a busy man but if—" Cutting her abruptly “No, no it’s fine. Please tell him I’m on my way.” He informed her.

The man turned from the window. "She will," he said. "Let's just sit and watch." She took a slow sip of water and looked away. Emilia Carrington swiveled her chair again. It's not a bad idea, she thought. It is actually a very good idea. She reached for her phone. She scrolled to a contact, her finger hovered over the name. She pressed call. The person answered. "I will send you something, you know what to do.". She hung up after giving the instructions.

Emily Walton… that girl didn’t feel like someone who runs away from responsibility. The office is dim except for the thin blade of city light cutting across my desk, and I am halfway through reviewing shipment projections when my phone vibrates against the glass surface. It’s her Emily Walton. I let it ring once more before answering. “…Henry,” her voice comes through, softer than usual. “You’ve been getting comfortable calling me directly,” I reply, my tone even, almost lazy, though my eyes have already drifted to the Walton file resting at the edge of my desk.

Emma appeared with a mug of milk, offering it to Justin with a soft smile. Emily had assumed the call was from a courier or delivery service, so she had answered without thinking. But as soon as Justin spoke, she recognized his voice. It was the same aloof, authoritative tone as always, as if he was issuing royal decrees. Before she could hang up, Emma’s sweet voice drifted through the receiver, loud and clear. Emily’s expression darkened, and without hesitation, she ended the call. She immediately blocked the new number too. She had no interest in figuring out how Justin had managed to get another phone number to call her.

When her phone rang, she screamed in fright which in turn scared Lizzie who started to cry. “Oh, baby girl, I’m sorry,” she soothed the startled child. Emma picked her up, bouncing her on her hip. A quick glance at the phone’s screen revealed it was an unknown number. Normally, those went unanswered. But something stirred within her. Answer it. Emma answered the phone and put it on speaker. It would be easier to speak that while she was holding the baby. “Hello?” “An inmate from Queensbury City Jail is trying to contact you,” an automated voice said. “Press one to accept the call.”

She swallowed, trying hard to suppress the urge to ask about him. "Ma'am," Lily called. She was the sweet new girl Calista had recently hired. She had been doing a really good job since she got hired. Calista turned towards her, appreciation overly written on her face. "A customer needs your attention." "I gotta go, Em. Hopefully, this won't be the last time I talk to you. I need to know what's going on with you and your husband-to-be." Emily smiled, waving goodbye before ending the call. Calista turned to Lily and smiled. "You saved me from listening to this naughty heart of mine. I owe you one."
