Finally, at six thirty, there was a knock on the door. I stood to open it, and a huge bouquet blocked my view. It was camellias, my favorite flower. Even though my severe allergies and past surgery meant I could barely smell anything, I couldn't help but smile. Harry stood at the back of the group, his gaze gentle, his voice steady. "I love you, Selena." I moved through the crowd, almost running into his arms. "I love you too." But the next second, he didn't hug me back. Instead, he shoved me away with force.

“I need a drink.” Jackson steps forward, slow and deliberate. “You’re not going anywhere.” “I know,” the man groans. Another low horn bellows from the harbor outside. A rat scurries across the floor. The One Direction playlist changes to ‘One Way Or Another’, which somehow makes the moment worse. I glance around the space again. Cracked tiles. A flickering light above a wall calendar that says April, even though it’s July. The scent of salt and diesel mixes with the aroma of old takeout and the lingering scent of failed ambition. It’s a dump.

“So, would you like to go tomorrow to pick it out?” Jasmine bit her lower lip. “As long as it’s early. I have a date with Zain tomorrow night for the Fourth of July. We’re going out to dinner, and then we’re going to watch the fireworks on the beach.” Her father sighed. “Well, I guess I could miss my tee time one day. I’ll text Frank and let him know.” “Yeah!” Jasmine squealed, excited at the prospect of getting a new car. Even though she wouldn’t drive it off the lot, she would have it in Tennessee… and that was what counted.

We said we couldn't date each other's brothers; there was no rule that said we couldn't fantasize about them. Ugh. I was going to hell, wasn't I? "Hey, my parents' anniversary is today so they're going away for the night and Asher just texted me saying that he's throwing a party tonight. You're still coming over right?" Harper asked as we finished our final class of the day. Shit. Their parents were going out of town and he's throwing a party. There would be alcohol there and I sometimes couldn't handle myself around that crap. I was also still fantasizing over a guy I couldn't have and when I mixed alcohol with my emotions, it could get ugly.

I thought that my power would never manifest fully until I found my One. And then there were Four of them, each bringing out something new in me. Even then, I felt like a freak. I felt like all of this, the war and chaos on Altinna’s shore, were because of me. And, maybe it is. But Seraphira is right. No one else is coming to save me. No one else is coming to save Altinna. If I can’t do it, who will? I turn my attention back to her Four, still mesmerized by how in sync they are. Is it because they love her? Because she loves them? Or, maybe, is it because they know that their true purpose is to lead as one?

I can't give my life to that man. Footsteps were approaching. I don't know if it's Adam or Gavin. But whoever it is, I feel that soon, my world will come crashing down.

I closed my eyes and forced my tears back. Then, Grayson posted another update. It was a video of fireworks at Lotus Bay.
