Declan asked, his clear voice, low and shaky. “Do you really want to know?” I snapped. He pushed open the door and stepped out. As I came out, he was already gone. I walked into the house, began making coffee for myself and then sipped it as I shedded tears. I was so sad because my life was a whole mess. It made no sense, nothing made any sense to me. Everything was so damn temporary for me. Nothing stuck. In less than four months I would be thirty-five. If my love life wasn't so damn messed up, I would be settled with a family. I would be something, I would have a certain kind of wholeness I was sure most people felt on a daily basis.

He takes pride only in dragging that person down to his level. "I only understood this after you were gone. The one who deserves to die… is me." Mom's finger clutched the trigger tightly. If she loosened her finger even slightly, she would die right in front of me. I panicked and screamed with all my strength, "No, Mom, don't! Don't die!" Mom's eyes were vacant, her spirit completely crushed. Just as she was about to release her grip, the pearl earring on the table suddenly shattered. The bead rolled across the floor, its sound bringing Mom back to her senses.

But now… “Great! Now that’s done let me explain the rules of the new game. You are going to tell me a story. All you have to do is survive the story. Simple right?” Of course, it was not as simple. Anderson knew very well that anything concerning a demon would not be as simple. What was worse, this particular demon was very different. So, who knew what twisted game of story telling the demon had in mind? Anderson nodded warily at the demon’s enquiry. Whatever was coming he knew very well the odds would be against him as such he had his guard up. It was funny; He was rather feeling like the trapped one.

Mom chuckled, “I don’t think it was adapted into a play, but it is a short story. An old one, at that.” I forgot that mom had been reading more lately. “Are you familiar with it?” “Well sure, it’s a simple story. To boil it down, it’s about a guy who has too much pride and takes a stupid deal that would inevitably lead to his death just to, in my opinion, show off.” I froze in my chair and stared at her blankly for a minute before I finally said, “Huh.” “It’s an odd choice of story to use.” “He said that I was the challenging green monster because of my eyes and personality.”
