Her eyelids grew heavier and heavier until she could no longer keep them open. When she woke up again, her stomach felt empty. The only thing that had ever given her hope was gone. Down below, a girl in a white dress was on her tiptoes, reaching for a balloon tangled in a tree. A boy dashed up, gave her a playful hair tousle, and with a quick jump, snagged the balloon for her. She grabbed it and planted a kiss on his cheek, leaving him blushing like a tomato. I watched them and could not help but crack a smile. Life was good.

I shake my head, trying to snap out of it, and tuck the note carefully into the pocket of my apron.
