They were making fun of Carl, and it hurt my heart to see Carl cast out like this from the other boys. “I don’t want to ride the ponies any more,” Carl said, as he moved the dirt around with the toe of his shoe. “What’s the matter, Carl? Are you scared of the ponies?” Leo scoffed. “Did you hear that guys? Carl’s too scared to ride a little pony.” They all laughed again, causing Carl to recoil behind my legs.

I go limp in their arms and laugh along with them. Going out apparently means The Gruesome Pony, a hole-in-the-wall tavern in the town that is slowly regrowing outside the walls of the palace.
