When they had arrived at the station, Jodi wasn’t walking fast enough for Marty, so he scooped her up in the parking lot and carried her in. The rookie and Patty were knocked out cold when they had arrived. The pale man, who Jodi learned later was called Ghost, was walking down the hall towards them. He had on an orange jumpsuit. The conversation played out in Jodi’s mind. “I told you, Paul. Ghost got captured because he wanted to be. He already took care of the pests,” Marty bragged as he held Jodi in his arms. “You have time to figure out which office is Kirby’s?”

The possessive way he fucked me like he both hated and needed me. I forced a grin. “You’re crazy, man. You watch too many movies.” He stepped aside but whispered as I passed, “Run while you still can. He’ll ruin you.” Later that day, I overheard two employees gossiping near the cafeteria. “Did you hear about The Ghost? Some billionaire who shows up masked at underground parties. Pays good money, fucks like a demon, then vanishes. Nobody ever sees his face.” I laughed it off again. But deep inside of me, i was worried for myself.

It was the kind of glass door where it was only transparent on one side and I was guessing that it was from the inside. We walked into the room and who I saw caused my breath to hitch. It was Patty! She was not even paying attention, she was sitting on a couch and had a laptop on her lap. “Um, hi?” I tried to get her attention. My voice was small and comical. She looked up at me at the same time that the door of the office was closed. A surprised look covered her face and she could not believe her eyes. “Heather? What are you doing here?” She asked sweetly as she placed the laptop down on the couch and stood up.

A vase flew at my head. I ducked instinctively, the ceramic shattering against the wall behind me. I straightened slowly, blade already drawn. Then I heard his voice. Low. The banquet hall glittered with gold and crystal as Helena Shaw stood arm in arm with her fiance, smiling as they greeted their guests. The warmth and celebration vanished as a girl appeared, and the hall fell dead silent. Nellie Scott gripped her invitation. Her faded denim jacket, which was washed thin and pale, looked painfully out of place in a room glittering with silk and diamonds. "Who's that? Showing up dressed like that to Ms. Shaw's engagement party?" "Where's security? What are they even doing, letting a beggar like this in?"

In all her loud silk scarves and unapologetic flair. By the time I reached the bottom of the stairs, I saw her bustling toward the kitchen, her designer cooler clutched like it held state secrets. She was muttering in Spanish under her breath, the way she did when emotionally disturbed by either gossip or hunger.

What a terrible lie. Patty wasn't buying it. It was obvious from her expression but before she could say anything else, we heard voices coming from behind us. Probably elites. While I was thinking, we just had to get out of the way or walk faster, I saw that Patty had stopped. She had turned pale white, and her eyes were wide with fear. “That's Sasha's voice.” She whispered. My eyes widened in horror. Moving out of the way wouldn't work. From what I've heard about Sasha, she lived to make our lives miserable.
