Insects chirped softly, filling the silence between Pearl’s broken murmurs.
Finally, she laid a blanket beneath a thicket and curled up, cloak drawn tight, eyes fixed on the sliver of sky she could see. Silent tears slipped down, catching what little starlight there was. No sobs. Just the slow, steady ache of someone who doesn’t dare break loudly.
I stayed. Watching. Guarding. Because apparently, I’m an idiot.
Dawn seeped into the forest like spilled gold, pale and thin at first, then bleeding across the sky. Mist clung to the ground, curling around roots like spectral hands. Dew glittered on leaves, dripping onto Pearl’s cloak as she stirred awake.
