Seeing it lifted the gloom from me. Jonathan bought it, saying pets heal the heart; when I felt down, I should hold it and let it warm me. Of course, if it warmed me, I must care for it properly—plump it up, keep its fur glossy. So I bought cat food, a bed, cans of pâté—an entire haul. On the way home, the sky opened. A gray stray cowered under an awning, soaking wet. The shopkeeper kicked it away, and the cat slunk out into the downpour to seek shelter. I thought of myself—an orphan, drifting, always without a home, always looked down on.

I recalled some photo albums in the bookcase and resolved to look through those, as well. Finally, I opened the third box, digging through some well-read books and a few other items. At the bottom was a pile of black books, the pages dog-eared, and the spines well-worn. The front of the books contained only a label with a set of dates written in Penny’s spidery hand. I opened one, scanning the first few pages until I figured out what I was reading. Penny’s journals. There were ten of them, all documenting different spans of her life. I found the one that corresponded with the year she found Katharine and I started to read.

Why in the world did he have all of these for? My fingers danced along the spines of the book in curiosity. I pulled out each book slightly, hoping like my library one of them would reveal some secret compartment. I stopped as one book caught my attention. It didn’t feel solid like the other books. It was too light. “Penn, I think I’ve got something.” I pulled it out. It was a black book with no title. I opened it to discover it was a hollow book. A velvet box, slightly smaller than the book, was hidden inside of it. I opened the box and smiled.

Helplessness pierced my heart. The chances of rescue were nearly gone. I stroked my belly through the pain, talking to my baby. I prayed that, if it had a next life, it would be born into a pack where its father loved its mother. Then it would be happy. My breath grew faint, my blood turning to ice in my veins. Suddenly, the cage door swung open, and the lights flickered on. The sight of me in a pool of my blood startled the wolf who stood there. I used my last bit of strength to inch forward, whispering, "Help… me."

I gritted my teeth as I pushed my fear away and clenched my hands at my sides. Then I spun around and cautiously pressed my trembling hands on the musty door, finding a small crack to see what was going on out there. Penn drew closer to the house with pieces of cardboard in her hand. She was dressed casually in black sweat shorts and a mustard T-shirt, appearing deceptively harmless. Luckily, I circled the cabin with barrier dust to keep out magic users, which she soon realized. It made her stop about two feet from the defective step. She cast her eyes to the ground, knowingly.

Then I turned around and left, leaving the little devil behind in her new cage. A. He gestured to the two guards, who immediately set the crates onto the dining table and began opening the heavy latches. They pulled out the brass lamp, unscrewing the base to check for hidden transmitter devices, before inspecting the sealed bottles of solvent and the steel pens. "Everything is clear," one of the guards reported, snapping the crates shut and stepping back toward the corridor.

"If you are playing me I will destroy you." "I am not " Alex said fiercely. He moved closer. ". Keep accusing me and I might start wishing I was the one selling you out." Rowan grabbed Alexs arm pulling him against the desk. Their bodies pressed together. Alex could feel the line of muscle beneath the suit. "You have no idea what you are walking into " Rowan said, voice rough. "This company is not business. It is a cage.. I am both prisoner and warden." The confession slipped out small but real. Alex caught the flash of something haunted in Rowans eyes.
