Blood splattered across the pale stone bright red against gray. “Fuck.” Before I could wipe it away, heavy footsteps approached. My beta, Thorne, appeared at the balcony entrance. His sharp eyes took in the scene in one glance.

I wanted to scream at the sky, to demand some kind of cosmic accounting for how far this had all spiraled beyond anything resembling reason. Jaxx hit the gravel hard, his hands catching his weight at the last second. He let out a wet, rattling cough, a dark splatter of blood spraying across the grey stones directly beneath his face.
