His hand moved slowly up and down my back, a gesture meant to soothe, but it only amplified the storm inside me. “I’m sorry,” he said again, his voice trembling now. He repeated it like a mantra, over and over, as if saying it enough times would erase the pain or undo what had been done. “I’m really really sorry for everything I’ve done wrong to you, esmarie.”
