And the tears kept falling. How am I going to get out of here? Someone heard me cry. At first I thought it was Alex. Maybe he’d heard me. But the person I saw made me freeze. John, captain of the Westbrook Ravens. He’d tended to his wounds from earlier, but his cheek was still swollen. He stepped in, then stopped.

Beneath the photo, a single line of text was typed out. The screen glowed brightly in the dark: "We know what is happening inside the nest, Captain Kael. See you at Game Five."

Kelly walks in just then, his eyes are so confused, they jump from Jazz to me, to his captain, to his captain’s hands massaging Jazz’s. “Who’s the pretty boy?” I exhale, just one time, I need my plans to work. “He’s an officer, not a pretty boy.” Golden Boy speaks up. “Is she going to help us find Jake?” Kelly asks, keeping his eyes on his captain, he is as tired of this as i am. He was one of the guys on his team I could trust because of the respect he has for Golden Boy, he sees all of the hard work Golden Boy put in to get to this level, and he respects it. He doesn’t mind that someone so young is his captain.

For the first time, he didn’t seem like the untouchable captain everyone feared. I don’t know what made me walk over. “You okay?” I asked quietly. He lifted his head slowly. Those icy blue eyes met mine, and for a second he looked surprised I was still there. I shifted on my feet. “Earlier… when that guy got hurt. You got to him really fast. Thanks for helping him. Most captains would’ve waited for the coach.” Cole stared at me for a long moment, like my words didn’t make sense to him. “You noticed that?”

The video zoomed in close right as Brayden leaned down and pressed that slow, deliberate kiss against my flushed cheek. The caption across the bottom of the screen read: Star hockey captain drops the gloves on his own identical twin brother over a freshman. The drama is drama-ing at Berkeley. "The comments are absolutely brutal, by the way," the pink-haired girl whispered, her voice dripping with a mix of excitement and fake sympathy. "The campus gossip pages are already reposting it everywhere. Half the athletic boards are calling you a total homewrecker, and the hockey groupies are basically labeling you a puck-bunny who manipulated her way into the captain’s penthouse apartment."

“Alright, Pop has spoken, so it looks like you three are on my crew. It’s usually just Jeremy and me, so we never win. The object of this game is to kidnap Captains Pop and Hachiman while defeating their crew.” Storm and I grin at each other. Oh, we got this. Although Carter knows all our tricks, it might be slightly difficult, as we are used to working as a team. “Avast crewmen Jen, Storm, and JT! Let’s go capture us a pirate ship!” Carmen shouts. We join her in exclamation for the fearsome fight ahead of us. Dad ends our game when I scoop up Captain Pop in a football carry and run into the house for dinner. Storm captured Captain Hachiman, throwing him over one shoulder.

In the afternoon, after their cheerless and tasteless brunch, the captain came down to the brig to grace them with his presence. Aki was right, the four most important people on the ship were: Captain Fang, the Dark Emperor, Kosano and Yuriko; in that order. But because they were pirates, it was easy to imagine incessant politicking among the last three.

She smirked at me, placing a hand on her hip as she looked me up and down. "Thanks." I smirked back at her, sitting on the edge of the bed. "I just wanted to let you know that tonight is a super important night for the pack." Kira nodded, flopping down beside me on the bed. "Wait, what?" I didn't bother hiding the confusion in my voice. "Killian became Alpha today, five years ago." She continued, "So every year we hold a celebration." "Oh, Killian never told me." I frowned, wondering how he could leave something like that out.
