I immediately run to the nearest comfort room and vomit. I sat on the floor, feeling weak, trying to catch my breath, “What the hell is happening to me? I can’t be pregnant, I don’t even have a boyfriend,” I mumbled to myself, I haven’t eaten any, so, I don’t know why I feel this way.

That sense that there is something growing inside of me. I get off my bed and move to go stand in front of the mirror. My hand drifts without thinking to my stomach. This is not the body I had three days ago. The bump is undeniable now. Just three days and I already look six months gone. I have been checking the timelines online. My skin now feels tight beneath my palm. Unfamiliar. I do not feel any pain just a sense of being full. I have also not felt any of the usual signs or symptoms associated with being pregnant. Apart from the dizziness in the mornings and the obvious swell of my stomach I have not felt anything different.

His voice cracked on the word baby, like he couldn't quite believe it was real, was happening to them specifically. "No. Maybe. I don't know." Amelia's free hand went to her stomach, pressing flat like she could feel the truth through skin and muscle. Nothing felt different. She didn't feel pregnant. Didn't feel like her body was suddenly creating another human without her conscious permission. "Are you sure? Could it be something else? A mistake?"

“So… I’m pregnant, but it’s like I’m not? Why?” “Well, It’s unusual but not impossible,” she said. “Your uterus may be tilted, or your hormone levels are unique. Stress can play a role too, and you’ve had a lot lately—according to you, wedding, moving, work. It doesn’t affect the baby’s health, but we’ll monitor you closely.” “Stress,” I muttered, “So what do I do? Just… wait?” “Rest, eat well, reduce stress,” she said, handing me a pamphlet. “We’ll schedule monthly scans to track progress. You might start showing soon, or it could stay subtle. Every case is different.”

"I am so sorry Mrs Alira but your chances of carrying a child of your own are very slim and nearly impossible....but there are other options to look at..we have surrogacy, adoptions and…” "No!!!!! No..no..no..no..this can't be, doctor…this test is wrong!! My fingers hook into her waistband, and I yank her jeans and underwear down in one desperate motion, tossing them somewhere behind me without ceremony. I look. Nothing. No baby. But … something definitely looks different down there. “Is he there?” Mel pants anxiously. “No!” I say quickly. “Breathe … just breathe … like in the classes.” I take a dramatic inhale. “IN … two … three … four …” Then exhale. “OUT … two … three … four …” I try again. “In … two … three … four …” My head starts spinning. Okay. This breathing crap is NOT working. Maybe I’m doing it wrong. I try again. Still dizzy.

How did I not notice? Could I really be pregnant?

Pelummi wasn't one to talk though because she did even worse things for the sake of a few peanuts thrown her way. "Let's go," I said softly. She nodded. We got up from the chair, but I was a tad slower than she was. My tummy seemed to be dragging me down. It wasn't like this before. I tried to mask the panic as I walked away from the table, but a sharp pain hit my lower abdomen unexpectedly causing me to still my movements. My breathing became irregular, and I was completely vulnerable to more acute pains that shot through my stomach. Was my baby, ok? What was going on?

I feel so tired, so out of it and-- My hand moved instinctively to my stomach, a small gasp poured out of my lips when I remembred my situation. The baby. Oh god, my baby. Panic slammed into me. My shaky fingers pressed against my abdomen, searching for… what? Some sign that everything was okay? That my baby was still there, still safe? I couldn’t feel anything. Just the slight swell of my belly, the same as it had been. But that didn’t mean anything. Didn’t mean everything was fine.
