Mike stepped on the gas. “Shit, damn it Jensen don’t you dare fucking die on us.” I heard Trevor say. “Jacob, he’s not breathing. Move him straight so I can start CPR.” I turned back, but Jacob was now blocking my view. We pulled into the hospital ER loading and unloading area. Mike jumped out and ran in as I flew open my door and then opened the back door. I saw Jensen’s lifeless body as Trevor was pumping on his chest. No, no, no I thought and tried to keep it together.

"There are a hundred women named Ashley Hartwell. It doesn't mean anything." "Petra." My voice came out sharper than I meant it to. "Is there anything else in the letter? A birthmark, a date, anything that could confirm this?" Paper rustled again on the other end of the line. "There's a birth date," Petra said slowly. "It matches yours exactly." The car went silent except for the hum of the engine and my own heartbeat pounding too loud in my ears. "Kian," I said. "How much further?"

Either way I meant it. He said: "Okay." One word. Warm in a way that one word shouldn't be able to carry. He said it and nodded once and I felt something settle in my chest that had been unsettled for a long time. --- Two hours later my phone buzzed. Petra. She was requesting a conversation. Off-camera. Her phrasing was careful. Not for the documentary. Something I want to discuss privately. I showed Jaxon. He read it. We looked at each other.

"Eli! Wait up!" I turned to see Petra jogging toward me. She was one of the few people I’d met during orientation who didn't make me want to roll my eyes, and she was a theater major with bright purple streaks in her hair and a personality that was way too bubbly for nine in the morning. "Did you actually just do that?" she asked, catching her breath as she reached me. "Do what?" I asked, starting to walk toward the dining hall. "You sat in Cain Calloway’s chair, Eli. People have seriously been kicked out of the program for less. Okay, that’s a lie, but still. You basically told the king of the school to kick rocks. Do you even know who they are?"

She turned with a nod of gratitude my way. "Sorry I ever doubted you," she told me before refocusing on the battle. I could see Petra and Jesse smiling in the distance as if this were some kind of game they were enjoying. Jesse seemed to glow the same way Petra did and I wondered what happened between the two of them. I couldn't see anything about Petra, not her future, not her present, and definitely not her past. I am thinking it's because of the God side of her. I can't see anything that pertains to the gods and their devine plans.

"Petra's staying with Winter for a bit. I figured, the more the merrier, right?" Petra stepped over the threshold, her leather jacket brushing against my arm. She leaned in just enough for only me to hear, her voice a poisonous whisper. "Don't look so terrified, Drama Queen. Your secret is safe... for now. Noah made his point." She pulled back, her eyes dancing with malice. "But he didn't say anything about me not being allowed to play with you." She turned toward my mother, her face transforming into a mask of perfect, polite charm. "Hi, Mrs. Kay. Thank you so much for having us. You have such a... wholesome home."

I’m still wheezing, trying to catch my breath, and internally panicking in response to Theo bringing up my mystery girl in front of… well, the mystery girl herself. “Yeah,” I sputter hoarsely, blinking the tears from my eyes and drawing a deep breath. “Wrong pipe.” I’m not fooling Quinn, though. She’s sitting across from me at the table, a smug little smirk tugging at her lips. “Mystery girl?” she asks, arching a brow. “Yeah,” Theo laughs, clapping me on the shoulder and giving it a rough squeeze. “Jax has been on the hunt for weeks trying to find some girl he met in Stillwater, isn’t that right, Romeo?”

A soft voice echoed, “Who sent you?” Alma stepped forward. “Marika. We’re not enemies. We want to stop the ones who took your company.” The figure stepped into the light, a woman in her forties, eyes sharp, face scarred from more than just time. “I’ve been hiding for five years,” Petra said. “Because I saw the files your father helped bury. Files that could take down the real monsters.” She pulled a small hard drive from her jacket. “This is what they’ve been hunting. If I give it to you, they’ll come harder than ever.”

“I was thinking about having Petra name our son after you, but dammit I’m taking that shit back! This is a fucking travesty!” Petra, Cade’s—girlfriend?—was pregnant with his son. How he let that happen was beyond me, considering how psychotic she could be, but pretty soon, we’d have a tiny warrior in the mix. We were excited about the baby, Petra, not so much. “Shut the fuck up,” Jax screamed. He managed to slip an elbow through my guard, but I caught it before he could use it and twisted it away from me. He let out a grunt and glared.
