Pick A Number Novels & Stories

"Instead, it will be randomly determined by drew." The complaints grew louder at this, but she simply reached into a woven basket and retrieved a stack of folded papers. "Inside this basket are numbered slips. You'll each draw one, and whoever has the same number will be your partner." One by one, we filed up to the front, each selecting a paper from the basket. My fingers closed around a blue slip and I made my way back to my seat, hands trembling slightly as I unfolded it. The number 22 was printed in bold across the center. I glanced around, wondering who else would have the matching number.

Anyone with an amount in mind will shout out Mine and the game begins. My eyes unconsciously went in Leo's direction yet again. I don't know why, l just needed to see his face at that moment. He smiled and just nodded at me fervently. It made my mind at ease. I gazed at the many lots on my table and searched through the numbers. I picked a lot of 1,299$ and timidly shouted, “Mine.” *1,299$ Who is opposing one time?* Diva sings. "3,000$ Mine.” The Personal assistant to the Governor raised his lot.

The picking continued until it was Nathan’s turn. “Oh guys, I wish I could pick the same number as either one of you picks. Pray for me.” Nathan took a deep breath and picked a paper from the bowl. It was number 17 and someone has already picked the other number, Nicole, a member of the IT girls. Knowing his partner, Nathan looked at Nicole sitting at the back who rolled her eyes with an instant. Now, it was finally Lila’s turn. A sigh escaped from her mouth as she mumbled, “Anyone will do. It’s fine.”

Then she reached across the table again, took his hand, held it in the library where anyone could see, where Chelsea could see, where Dante would eventually hear. "Then choose me," she said. "Publicly. Loudly. Without calculation. And let me choose you back, even though I don't know if I'm performing or becoming, even though the dare persists, even though—" She squeezed his hand. "Even though I might hurt you. Even though I might become her. Even though I might not know the difference until it's too late."

There’s another message waiting. Unknown: You can’t get away that easily. I snort quietly and type back before I can talk myself out of it. Me: You were given a perfectly good number. The reply comes almost immediately. Unknown: Perfectly good for avoiding me. Okay… fair. I sit on the edge of the bed, tucking my legs underneath me. Me: How did you even get this number? Three little dots appear, then disappear, then reappear again. Unknown: I have my ways.

“Do I read it over and pick, or simply pick a number at random?” “Either or,” Liviana shrugs. “It’s up to you.” “Alright...” Nadia hums, closing her eyes for a moment before speaking the number of her choosing. “Thirty two.” She says, opening her eyes and flipping through the pages, finger running down the paper as she searches for the number. And then she finds it, reading it silently as a smile slowly spreads. “What is it?” Leona asks, ever impatient as she stares over at her friend.

I am falling for her. I tap her photo in my phone, and revel at the beauty that will be mine and I send a little message of thanks to the almighty Moon Goddess. She had made me wait but they say the best things are worth waiting for. Only when I’m finished admiring her do I press the call button. I feel genuine nerves for the first time in my life as I wonder what I should say to her? The line rings twice before Helen answers. “Hey, Shortie, did you miss me?” Fuck! I am so lame, why didn’t I just say ‘hey, how are you doing’ or just play it casually?
