She even apologized as if whatever she said on that video call was something she just said yesterday. She extended her right hand forward as if she was offering a handshake and I had no way to deny her. “Mrs. Parker,” I greeted back politely. “Mister Parker. Sandra though sighed, unaffected and softly she said. “I'm a little late for my yoga appointment. So men, if you'll excuse me, I will leave you to your troubles and you can settle this in your own barbaric ways. Just please, tone it down... my daughter is having her nappy.”

Parker suddenly asked, breaking her thoughts. “Huh? Did you say something, Uncle Parker?” Lydia asked, unsure if she’d heard correctly. “I asked if you’re afraid of me,” Parker repeated, his tone a mix of curiosity and amusement. Lydia paused, momentarily taken aback, before shaking her head. He wasn’t frightening, despite his imposing stature, fierce demeanor, and the intimidating reputation of being Mr. Parker. When he smiled or laughed, it was as if the world brightened. “I’m just an ordinary man,” Parker said with a soft smile. “I express myself straightforwardly, just like how I feel about you.”

Parker makes a soft, broken sound that’s somewhere between a laugh and a sob. He ducks his head, scrubbing a hand over his face like something’s in his eye. It’s not.
