‘Even though online school is boring I’ll do it anyway. I must admit she is right, online school is truly boring. This pandemic has taken so much away from her childhood. Instead of her learning and playing with the other children at school, she attends online classes. She cannot go outside to meet with her playmates. And I can only imagine how she misses going to the playground and mall so bad.

I know you do. The words hang in the air between us, heavy with all the things we don’t say. And again, it’s silent—that deafening silence that I can’t stand. I clear my throat, taking short steps to close the distance between us as I desperately try to lighten the air in the room. “I got some good news today,” I mention. “The dean emailed me the acceptance request for online classes. I’m all set to start the fall semester. I’ll just have to attend in-person exams.”

I could've gone into town during the week and signed up for school with my new name and falsified transcripts, but the thought of sitting in a classroom all day didn't appeal. So, I put school on hold for a while until I decided to sign up for online classes once the internet was up and running. I thought Gabriel every day, and when I didn't think of him, he invaded my dreams to the point that I'd sometimes wake up in such pain it was hard to escape.

I'm hopping that a mouth should do the trick." Dad asked and I thought. I had three online classes this semester and only one that met once a week. I was way ahead in that class and the professor was someone that I had in the past. He trusted me and he would be okay with me missing the next few weeks.

Citing a viral infection, I take the college's option of online classes, and since I don't have a job anymore, I leave Harry to Maddie, throwing myself into the coursework and assignments. I don't sleep. I barely eat, becoming a shell of myself. By the time I hand in the assignments, I have circles under my eyes, but inside my eyes, there is a grim satisfaction because I am cleared for the exam within an hour. I handed in the form withdrawing from Morris's class and the form for sitting for this new course's exam.

I even ignored Maya’s four missed calls and Clara’s text that just said, “Stay strong.” This wasn’t my first heartbreak. But this one… this one had claws. It was my first day back in my art and poetry class, and all I wanted was to slide into the back, sketch in peace, maybe even let my mind drift off into something softer than reality. I wasn’t going to think about Leo. I wasn’t going to think about Camille. I wasn’t going to let my name trending on campus socials get to me. Except for the moment I walked into class, I felt it.
