Carried authority. Together is correct, the philosopher conveyed. Punishment serves purpose. Purpose is change. Purpose is learning. Purpose is growth. If change is achieved, if learning is complete, if growth is accomplished, then punishment served its purpose. Continuing punishment beyond purpose is not justice. Is vengeance. Is cruelty. Justice seeks change. Vengeance seeks suffering. If change is achieved, justice is served. Vengeance may demand eternal suffering. But justice demands only necessary suffering. Only purposeful punishment. Only consequence that creates change. If change is achieved, justice is complete. Vengeance may want more. But justice is satisfied. Together is correct.
