He stopped abruptly, surprised at my behavior. "I think I might have the flu. Don't want to pass it around." I sniffed in pretense to the lie I'd just told. He didn't seem to be convinced. "Really?" I gulped. "Why are you here?" "This." I looked up for the first time since he had come in. He was pointing at his right eye. The skin around his eye had turned an ugly dark shade of purple. Whoever had hit him had the potential of being a pro boxer.

His eyes were dark yellow, like the sun, and there were white dots all around his pupil. There was also a cut on his left eye, as if someone had made it with a knife during a forced fight in an aggressive way. His mouth, with its rows of sharp white teeth, looked like it was ready to swallow him whole. There was an unnatural bulge growing out of its back where its spine would be.

Matthias was beyond ashamed. He could not believe that he never saw this coming. Mara had been depressed for years but she never showed any abnormal signs that might hint at thoughts of suicide. Matthias placed a hand over her forehead and used his thumb to gently lift her right eyelid. As expected, her pupil was dilated and did not react to the candlelight around the bed, and as he feared, the color of her eye, though faded, was still giving off that same unsettling shade of yellow.

His face was purple from lack of air and his eyes were wide with terror and his mouth was open in a silent scream that I wanted to hear but could not because I was choking the sound out of him. I raised my other hand and dapped my index finger into his left eye socket, digging deep, pushing past the resistance of flesh and muscle, pulling out his eyeball. The flesh was warm and soft and wet in my fingers, and I watched as the empty socket filled with blood that streamed down his cheek and dripped onto his chest, mixing with the blood from his other wounds.

Then it aggressively flips the car upside down, producing a head-shaking thud. Both Davide and I gasp in pain. When I inch my eyes open, my vision is blurred and one of my eyes is stinged with something oozy and sticky. Weakly, I lift my hand to my brow near that eye. I jolt in pain when my fingertips prod my brow. Without the need to see what my fingertips felt while prodding my brow, I know then that the oozy, sticky, painful and rusty-smelling liquid is my blood.

I just saw that a golden color came out of Elijah's body and it enveloped me. But, even if he did that the pain was not relieved. Suddenly I was shocked when I felt like there was an obstruction in my eye that was a bit painful and my vision turned red. Even though my head hurt, I was able to rub my eyes and was shocked by what I was seeing. I have blood on my hand. That blood came from my eyes. My eyes are bleeding. I can see how scared Elijah is. He tried to pick me up to take me out of the pyramid but suddenly my body sank into the floor creating a big groove around it.

His pupils were so big they swallowed his irises, and his skin was cool and clammy despite the afternoon heat. When I gently took his arm, I saw a series of small wounds along his forearm, bruised a strange yellowish-green. Puncture marks. A weight of dread gathered in the pit of my stomach. I smoothed his hair back gently and moved on to the next bed.

I worked in silence for a few minutes, carefully unwrapping the gauze. “Well, it doesn’t seem to have gotten infected so far,” I said, carefully inspecting the wound. “But it’s definitely a bite. I’m sure you already know that.” Eric clenched his jaw and looked away, but he didn’t need to give me an answer—I had known that it was a bite already, no matter how much he tried to hide it. Sighing, I slipped my small pen light out of my pocket. “I want to check your pupillary response,” I explained, flicking on the flashlight and shining it into first one eye, then the other. “Unresponsive pupils can be an early sign of Wolf’s Fury.”
