I dump my bag on the floor and read through the shelf while pulling books out and mumble as I go. ‘Even a book can be dangerous in the wrong hands.’ ‘Ignite.’ ‘Hell is empty and all the devils are here.’ ‘You’ll make bad choices. Sometimes you’ll choose the best of bad ones.’ ‘Tuesday is Fucked.’ ‘Everything’s a game. And now it’s your turn.’ I have a stack of about 10 books before I abruptly stop. "Next isle." I say and we walk up and down the library isles. I climb and jump to get books off of shelves and Aidan has to catch me a couple of times when I fell.

It was a perfect fit. Tara scoped the room for a place to put it. Maggie insisted she keep the book safe. The second-floor den had an enormous bookcase built into the wall. If she placed it on the top shelf it could easily blend in with the array of books of all shapes and sizes that were stuffed, shoved and crammed in rows from floor to ceiling. She felt a little light headed when she stood up. She couldn’t decide if it was from the power emanating from the book she held close to her chest or simply because she stood up too fast. One line stopped me completely. *If the ordinary systems fail, people will look for answers only after they need them.* I read it twice, something cold settling low in my chest. Margaret hadn’t been predicting one specific event. But she had clearly, deliberately prepared for a world where the systems everyone depended on might simply stop working. ----- The most recent maintenance entry gave me pause. Too recent. I checked the paper log beside the console and found most of it routine, unremarkable — until the very last entry.

Over the next few weeks, she planned to make up for that. She had sworn off post-apocalyptic stories—they were all starting to feel too much the same—but her best friend had recommended one so she had decided to give it a try. She was glad she had. The book was proving to be a fast-paced read with lots of new and interesting twists. She found it easy to escape into the story, which was exactly what she wanted after the long, difficult semester.

I wouldn’t want to live it, of course, but it’s fun to imagine how bad things could get, and how good people would function in the aftermath. In this book, I also explored a bit how harsh times make even good people do some questionable things. Can you forgive a good character if he (or she) does something morally ambiguous for the ones they love? I like complex characters and questions like that. I hope I gave a modicum of competency to exploring the idea.

To those who governed this place. It was a memory they refused to repeat. At the heart of the settlement stood the Council Citadel. Its towering white walls overlooked the entire city, its architecture untouched by war. Marble columns rose toward a vaulted ceiling where intricate murals depicted humanity's rise, its fall, and the solemn vow to preserve what remained.
