I heard a mutated beast swallowed him during a supply raid before he could even seek revenge. Five years later, as the first rays of sunlight pierced through the thick clouds and shone upon the earth, an excited voice blared over the loudspeaker. "Attention survivors! The National Academy of Sciences has successfully developed a serum to kill the zombie virus! The apocalypse is over! We have won!" Cheers erupted from the base. I stood on the city wall, watching the sun slowly rise in the distance. My parents, still full of energy, stood beside me. Dad patted my shoulder, saying with a grin, "Sweetie, how about we have a feast to celebrate tonight?"

He looked at the carnage around him, his face a blank slate of shock. And that’s when it hit me. The final, fragile illusion of society, of order, of help, shattered into a million pieces. This wasn’t a riot. This wasn’t a temporary crisis. The men in biohazard suits, the chained gurneys, the bloody cough, the biting… the gunshot executing the infected. This was the end. The world wasn’t going crazy. The world was gone. This island, this hospital, this room—this was the new world. Shit. This is the apocalypse.

She even joked around after exposing herself to this apocalyptic world. “Grandpa Su, I don’t know much about zombies or this apocalyptic era. I don’t even know how to help those survivors outside. Also, I am not a scientist that can experiment on zombies to find out their weaknesses but if my role is already fated since you glimpsed on star fate on the heaven. Then, my goal is to let other humans survived in this apocalyptic era by any means possible. I don’t know for sure yet but there will be a day that many humans will survive and wiped out those zombies” Psyche Flint firmly said as she stared directly on Grandpa Flint’s eyes.

I continued before he could interrupt me, “Six days from now, something will happen – I don’t’ know what exactly – but I do know the effects. It will begin suddenly, people will start getting sick, society will collapse, and the dead will rise.” His expression remained skeptical. “Are you talking about a zombie apocalypse?” he asked, his tone filled with confusion and slight disbelief, I nodded, “Yes, Zombies,” His face went completely blank. I sighed, “I know how it sounds, but that is the truth.” “You're telling me zombies are going to appear in six days?” he stared at me as he asked the question, “Yes.” I nodded, He just kept on staring. So, I took a deep breath and continued.

Chapter:16 One day until the apocalypse. The words echoed in my head as I stared at the ceiling of Marcus's apartment. Twenty-four hours. That was all the time I had left before everything changed. My phone buzzed. Another message from Daniel. You think you're smart, don't you? Playing games with me. But I know something you don't. I didn't respond. Another buzz. I know about your little friend. Marcus. I know what he really is. My heart stopped.

I didn’t expect the patch to come so soon. In the second month after the battle, the rooftop radio suddenly crackled to life with a crisp broadcast voice. "The Atlas Geothermal Initiative is now active. Surface temperatures will gradually recover. Rescue is on the way." Rhys and I just stared at each other. So this wasn’t a solo survival game after all. It was online, and the admins had finally logged in. A week later, a military helicopter landed in the open lot. Registration and verification went quickly. The officer in charge clapped me on the shoulder. "Turning the apocalypse into a warehouse operation! You’re one of a kind."

Not only that, but the setting will be post-apocalyptic, where the survivors have varying degrees of psychic powers. Most people will have low-level abilities, such as telepathy and empathy. Some will have incredible powers able to manipulate the physical world with their minds, such as telekinesis and precognition. A handful will be able to literally warp what’s real with a thought (sometimes carelessly). The novel will explore similar themes of power and corruption, but mostly fresh ones regarding reality and perception. Specifically, the differences between natural reality vs manufactured reality, and truth vs disinformation. Kinda like what we’re seeing politically across the globe.

There’s nothing left but survival. I stared at the words, my mind spinning. The Burning. That’s what people called it now, the apocalyptic event that had scorched the earth and turned the world into a wasteland. But this person—this scientist—had known it was coming. They’d predicted it. And somehow, they’d ended up here, in this bunker, leaving behind their journal like a final warning. I looked up from the journal, my pulse quickening. This wasn’t just a storm shelter. This bunker had belonged to someone who had known about the end of the world before it happened. Someone who had tried—unsuccessfully—to stop it.

That was also why our security was the best in the whole city. I only found out in my last life that, after the world was hit by the deadly heatwave, a lot of desperate people showed up. In the apocalypse, humanity meant little. Everyone answered only to themselves. But our community was the only one that never got attacked by any looters, all thanks to the top-notch security forces here. It stayed safe until the scientists finally managed to build weather bombs strong enough to fight off the deadly heat, and the heatwave finally ended. Everyone in our community survived.

The adrenaline from the docks still clung to my skin long after I returned to the penthouse. Even after locking the door behind me, I couldn’t shake the memory of the Stalker’s shriek echoing through the fog. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw those dead white eyes lunging toward me through the snow. The apocalypse had started early. Which meant every second mattered now. I crossed the dark penthouse slowly, the city lights of Oakhaven glowing beneath the floor-to-ceiling windows like a dying constellation. Somewhere below, people were laughing in rooftop bars, arguing in traffic, planning weddings and business meetings…
