Merely minutes in the open, my skin felt like it was scorching. I stayed about a week in the ruins of New York City, finding no one. My artificial intelligence spheres had expanded to 5000, continuously self-replicating. I managed to connect to the old satellites and summoned 200 spheres to venture into outer space, repairing and repurposing the old satellites into new ones. He had dark curls, green eyes, and a calm smile that carried no pity. “Miss Vale?” I looked at him. “I’m Adrian Bellini. My family funds part of Professor Shaw’s closed project. She asked me to make sure you got back safely.” I remembered Professor Shaw mentioning the Bellini family once during a project meeting, but I had never met him before. “Hello, Mr. Bellini,” I said. Behind me, Dante did not follow. This time, I did not look back. The car door opened. Beyond the city, the institute waited: the lab, the project, the life I had once thought I would never live long enough to claim.

Evelyn opened her mouth. Nothing came out. What was she supposed to say? You abandoned me to die three months from now? Instead, as she asked quietly, “What time is it?” He blinked at the question. “Uh… almost seven.” Seven in the morning. Three months before the apocalypse. Outside the apartment window, traffic moved normally through wet streets. Somewhere downstairs, someone laughed. A car horn sounded faintly in the distance. The world hadn’t ended yet. But it would. Evelyn wrapped her arms tightly around herself.

“Earthquakes. Floods. Collapses. I went into the broken buildings.” He says it without emphasis, which is how Maya has learned to recognize the things that cost him most. “Everyone runs out of a building when it comes down. Somebody has to be built to run in.” Maya says nothing. “Fifteen years going in after people.” His mouth shifts. “Then the world ends, and the apocalypse mostly removes the people part.” He looks again at the mark. “Now I clear rooms with nobody left inside and label them for a team that isn’t coming.” A small shrug. “Some habits are load-bearing. Pull them out, and I’m not entirely sure what’s keeping the rest of the wall standing.”

She whispered, a bit uncomfortable that somebody might quell us likewise. "But why now?" "I don't know. Perhaps the world's web was pruned off because of this apocalypse." I bobbed my head for a nod. I didn't mull over the queries in my head 'cause I'm pleased with her response. Making a fuss about it doesn't seem to fit these circumstances. After all, her replies made sense. However, people retained their gasps and murmurs when the news is in haste to provide details about this shit. "The extensive ultimate destruction of the world has now come."

This wasn’t a riot. This wasn’t a temporary crisis. The men in biohazard suits, the chained gurneys, the bloody cough, the biting… the gunshot executing the infected. This was the end. The world wasn’t going crazy. The world was gone. This island, this hospital, this room—this was the new world.

Elise led Lucas to a red Porsche and got in with him. Lucas stifled a laugh. These cars actually existed in the parallel world. One had to know that they were in the apocalyptic world. The infected areas and base cities were two completely different worlds. The faces of the men and women in base cities were more or less adorned with blissful smiles. Zombies were the least of their worries as the Fighters Alliance was there to defend them. The Fighters’ Alliance was the strongest human force in the apocalyptic world with many sub-alliances scattered across various base cities.

I didn’t expect the patch to come so soon. In the second month after the battle, the rooftop radio suddenly crackled to life with a crisp broadcast voice. "The Atlas Geothermal Initiative is now active. Surface temperatures will gradually recover. Rescue is on the way." Rhys and I just stared at each other. So this wasn’t a solo survival game after all. It was online, and the admins had finally logged in. A week later, a military helicopter landed in the open lot.
