The night was quiet now—eerily quiet—except for the soft crackle of dying embers and the ragged breaths of those who had survived. Evelynn sat with her back against a fallen tree, her body trembling, every muscle aching as if the fire had hollowed her out. Her hair clung to her damp skin, tangled with ash, her palms raw from the force of the blaze. The fire inside her was quiet now, dimmed to a fragile ember, but it left her shaken—like a storm that had passed but might still return at any moment.

Tears filled her eyes as she whispered against his chest, “Then burn it down. Burn the book. Please.” But when he reached for the pages, the blood hissed back like flames resisting him. The book laughed—a sharp, broken sound akin to paper tearing apart: “You can’t burn her story, fox; you can only read it…and reading means obeying.” Camela’s scream caught in her throat as she muttered, “It spoke…” Vincent bared his teeth in defiance as his fire flared even higher. “Then I’ll silence it,” he said fiercely. He slammed his hand down, his fire blazing but the pages didn’t burn. Instead, they bled harder and thicker, flooding the floor until it reached their ankles.

My heart skips a beat when I spot a group of firefighters gathered outside, not lounging or working out, but having a casual barbecue. The warm scent of grilled meat wafts through the air, mingling with the smoky tang of the fire pit. Some are shirtless, their muscular torsos glistening faintly in the golden glow of the setting sun. Most are still wearing their fire-resistant pants, suspenders hanging loose around their hips. A few sit on folding chairs, a drink in hand, while others stand by the grill, flipping burgers and turning hot dogs with ease. “Caroline, you’re staring,” Sam teases, nudging me hard in the ribs.

Those are the species that I am most interested in right now. Excitement courses through me as I make my way to the fictional section. This section is way smaller, only filling up a small fraction of the entire bookshelf. It seems our boy Ethan has a clear theme he is most interested in. Most of the books are about dragons, and the remainder have titles relating to war. Although I am not necessarily a pacifist, I am not particularly interested in reading books that contain wars. So, I pull out a book named “Princess Aria”.

Suddenly there were flames dancing in front of my eyes, beautiful red, yellow and orange colors intertwining with each other. The flames grew, they got bigger, and they engulfed my entire body. I felt them caressing me, giving me their warmth without burning me, as they burned brighter and brighter until it forced me to close my eyes. There he was, majestic in all his glory, surrounded by the most gorgeous fire I have ever seen, the phoenix from the painting. He got closer. He was mere inches away from me.
