“You’re two months along. The shells are forming. We expect them to hatch in another six months.” Six months. Much shorter than a human pregnancy. He was furious, and I had a feeling it had something to do with more than getting the cup from his hands. It was as though we were right where we had started the night just when I thought we were starting to tick. Ariel said as she try to see how the face of the woman in the dark looked like. Candles lit around the room and a figure of a woman appeared. Tying my hair back loosely, I applied a light layer of makeup before stepping out with him. As we walked through the resort grounds, something caught my eye. "A young woman. Dark hair. She would have arrived here around eight months ago, pregnant, alone." The woman's hand stilled on the counter. Kael saw it — the flicker of recognition, quick and immediate, gone almost as fast as it appeared, replaced by something guarded, protective.
