I stood by the door, taking deep, steady breaths, willing myself to stay composed before finally following.
When I reached the entrance, I found John and Rose standing there, looking disheveled—sweaty, exhausted. John's once-pristine shirt was smeared with mud, and Rose’s hair looked like a tangled bird’s nest. They had left less than six hours ago, so how did they already look this tattered?
"What are you two doing here?" I asked, stopping directly in front of them, arms crossed.
"You said we could stay if we promised to behave," Rose said, her voice weak. Before she could finish, her knees buckled, and she dropped to the ground.
