There was no fear I did not think about. The healers had cleared out a large room in the healer’s quarters for the process. It was reinforced with steel gates and looked more like a prison. I tried not to focus on that. I turned to the healers as they treated guards injured during the last attack. No matter what would happen later that night, I was still a healer in training, and this was my duty. A few minutes after watching them work, the communicator rang again. I still did not understand how it stayed on for so long without charging. I picked it up and held it close to my ear.

The guards rushed in, and a healer came up behind him with a needle, injecting it into his neck and calming him. When Heath had relaxed back on the bed, I met the eyes of the healer and gestured with my head for them to join me as I walked back toward the entrance of the infirmary. The guards relaxed now that I wasn't so close to the threat, and I couldn't help glancing back at Heath to see his eyes were cracked open, locked on me, and he was still smirking. "Your Highness," The healer greeted, and I nodded in acknowledgment, not knowing their name but not wanting to be rude.

"Someone who can take over my duties. And I want to be able to write to them, to advise on difficult cases." "Done," I said, surprising myself with how quickly I agreed. "Anything else?" She squared her shoulders, meeting my gaze with unwavering determination. "Yes. I won't be your prisoner. I need freedom to work, to help people. I won't be locked away in some tower just because you're paranoid." I stalked back to her, unable to resist the challenge in her voice. "And if I refuse?" "Then I'll make your life a living hell," she said without missing a beat. Her eyes bured with defiance. "I might be human, but I'm not helpless. I trail off not knowing how to finish my sentence. "Because you're valuable," he interrupts. "You're a healer!" "But why did you kidnap me?" I question again. "To keep you safe," he replies. "Safe from what?" I ask bewildered. "From those who would use you for their gain." "To keep me safe? You must be joking," I reply laughing bitterly. "Look at me! I'm chained in a prison cell. How is that safe?" "It's better than being dead," he says sternly.

He didn’t think so. There was something else going on. He just couldn’t tell what. Either the moon goddess had some big plans for him and Dhara or she was merely getting a kick out of his pathetic circumstances. Pathetic because the one woman he and his wolf agreed upon—wanted nothing more than to just claim her—was neither their mate nor someone they could mark. Healers were never known to be mated to anyone. They lived a solitary life. They were powerful but they were alone. It was just hard to say if that was a curse or a blessing.

~*~*~*~ We were then led to one of the prison cells where the servant was wrapped in a blanket. A healer attended to the whip marks and other wounds. Two guards laid out food for the poor soul. I winced as I watched how the healer poured medicinal powder over every wound. The servant flinched each time it made contact with his skin. My heart broke at such a painful sight. No one deserved this sort of cruelty. No one should be ridiculed just because they stood up for what they believed to be right. The guard on our left coughed, alerting everyone of our presence.

"We've earned breathing room. Let's use it to heal, regroup, and plan for whatever Richard throws at us."
