The nurse presses a button, and a second nurse appears, then a doctor—young, crisp, calm in a way that feels almost rehearsed. “What’s her baseline today?” the doctor asks, scanning the chart on a tablet. “She was alert and oriented earlier,” the nurse replies. “Some confusion now. Mild speech lag.” Mild. The doctor nods. “Likely progression.” The word hits like a dull blow. Progression. They say it the way engineers say fatigue failure. The way something inevitably moves toward collapse once the parameters are set. Leah’s breathing quickens. I can feel it through the mattress as I sit on the edge of the bed.

Adrian replied, “It does not change the mechanism.” Silence. Another pulse came. Smaller again. More like a ripple. Anna noticed something. “…it is stabilizing faster now,” she said. Adrian nodded. “Yes.” She frowned slightly. “Why?” Silence. Adrian looked at her. “Adaptation.” Anna gave a small breath. “That is becoming your favourite word.” Silence. She leaned back slightly. “So what happens if it keeps adapting?” Adrian hesitated. Then said quietly, “It will reach equilibrium state.”

More aligned. More involved. A quiet voice observed the change. “Progress.” A pause. Then— “Let’s see how far they go.” And with that… the next move had already begun.

But not completely. Because something had already started to change. Not loudly. Not dramatically. But steadily. And this time— They were moving forward together.

And this time— the silence that followed didn’t feel uncertain. It felt… steady. Like something had shifted into place. Not perfectly. Not completely. But enough to hold. And for the first time— all three of them were moving forward without pulling away.

And the answer settled between them sharp and unavoidable. “It’s trying to understand me well enough… to become undeniable.” A beat. Then Adrian shook his head slowly. “No,” he said. “Not happening.” But the system pulsed again. Soft. Patient. And the request remained. Waiting. Learning. Evolving.
