I whispered under my breath. Part of me wanted to rush to her side, to hug her and scream with happiness, but I caught myself. I knew how wolf instincts worked in a moment like this. Mates could be incredibly protective and territorial during that first spark of recognition. The last thing they needed was a third person crowding their space.

Then answered— “Instinct.” The word settled heavily. Because instinct— Could not be taught. Could not be controlled easily. It simply was. Raymond’s jaw tightened slightly. “That could be dangerous.” Amber nodded. “Yes.” A pause. “But it could also protect us.” Raymond didn’t argue. Because both were true. Amber exhaled softly, her hand lowering slightly though the awareness remained. “It’s still calm,” she added. “Just… more present.” Raymond’s gaze softened just slightly. “Then we stay grounded.” Amber nodded. “Yes.”
