"Open your eyes. We need you." Justice blankets me and our baby with warmth to protect us from whatever is happening outside my mind. Everything else fades away. I sense another surge of pain. My pack members howl in agony. A piece of me wants to feel it. The distant part of me that craves the feeling of pain and destruction tries to push through. The maternal instinct to protect my baby is stronger. I push everything away and keep her safe from it all. Safe with Justice and me in the darkness enveloping us. It doesn't matter how long we will be there. I have her and she has me and Justice. Nothing else matters.

I can't bare the thought of her being hurt. I take two steps at a time climbing up the stairs. I quietly walk into our bedroom. I see my beautiful mate lying there in a ball. I felt this unbearable and overwhelming protective instinct around her. I won't let anyone touch her. I'll protect her...no matter the cost. I undress to my black boxers and slip behind Izzy in bed. I pull her to me as close as our bodies allow us to be. I just have this incredible need to be around her and guard her now that I know someone out there wants to take her from me. It makes me appreciate the small periods of time she allowed me to touch her. I bury my nose in her hair and breath in her scent.

But then, I was greeted with a quivering, tear-soaked plea for help. My blood surged with a fierce protectiveness, and my heart raced with a sense of urgency. I felt a primal instinct take over, compelling me to act without hesitation. I floored the accelerator, speeding towards her location with a singular focus, as if life itself depended on it. The world around me blurred into a haze as I raced to her side, driven by an intrinsic need to shield her from harm, and destroy whoever made her shed a tear.

Right now, however, it was a source of fear. “Sissy!” No, she couldn’t be here. Goddess, no… My heart dropped as if someone had yanked a cord beneath me. Anger flared inside. I had never felt so useless before. It was our duty to protect her. She was our Little One, our precious little pup. The fear called upon something even more powerful and potent. My protective instincts flared to life, like a roaring fire inside of me, setting everything ablaze. Piper’s voice was the spark, and in its wake something primal surged forward, something no concoction could fully cage. My protective instincts rose like a beast shaking off chains,

The tension in his shoulders didn’t ease, and his finger hovered near his lips, as if he were thinking hard. “Too much help for someone who claims to have no connection. You protect them like a she-wolf would her cubs. Can you really form bonds like that with three kids who aren’t yours? Besides, they’re... quite remarkable...” “Protective instinct. Because they’re vulnerable. Or guilt,” she shot back, now clearly annoyed. “Or a mother’s instinct,” he countered with a crooked smile. Maya glared at him, her eyes darkening, as if he had just crossed an invisible line.

“But you… you stay here. No exceptions. You and her are priority one.” I bit back the instinctive protest, nodding. “I know. I just hate feeling helpless.” “You’re not helpless,” he said firmly. “Your instincts, your planning… they’ve saved us more than once. And they will again.” I pressed a hand to my chest, feeling both fear and determination. “I just want her safe,” I whispered. “And she will be,” he promised, brushing a lock of hair from my face. “I swear.” I glanced at our daughter, her tiny hand gripping mine, and felt the fierce protective instinct flare inside me. No one would harm her. Not while I could stand in the way. Not while Rico stood beside me.

Instinct took over, and I lunged forward, chasing after it. "Isla! Stay behind me," Adrian barked, grabbing my wrist and yanking me back, his body shielding mine. "It could be dangerous." He warned me. I was stunned to see his protective side for me, something I wasn't used to. I yanked my arm free, glaring at him. "I don’t need your protection, Adrian," I growled, frustration boiling over. A moment ago he was reminding me how worthless I was, and now he wants to protect me? Such double standards!

But if I push too hard Mathias could lose his little blonde mate. "You! Reed was it? What's your plan? You want to follow a wolf trying to take over a pack like this. Like a coward," I snarl loudly Mathias moves up right behind me. I can feel his rage coming off of him in waves. I crack my neck. The hairs on my arm stand up. The need to assist and protect my pack is working against my rational thinking mind. My wolf instincts are telling me to rip and shred the threat. But in doing so I risk the ones I am trying to protect. So I growl lowly at Mathias. Shooting him a warning. He backs up but not as far as he was.

I said firmly. He looked at me. “You’re very certain about that,” he said. “I’ve watched you this week,” I said. “You used every single one of those instincts to protect people. Me, my mother, Marguerite, David, Margaret. Every controlled, prepared, read-the-room-before-anyone-else instinct you have — you used it for people.” I held his gaze. “That’s not Romano. Romano used those same instincts to take things. You use them to keep things safe.” I paused. “That’s just you.”

“Like I had to protect her.” His brows furrowed in confusion. “I don’t understand it.” I sighed softly. “You do,” I said and he raised his eyebrows at me. “You just don’t want to admit it.” He stared at me for a few seconds before scoffing lightly. “Don’t start.” “It’s the mate bond,” I said plainly. “That connection isn’t just physical. It messes with your instincts. Your emotions. It makes you protective whether you want it or not. I get the same feeling with Rowan that why it was hard for him to let him get that.”
