Gradually, I started to adjust.
By the fourth round, I finally managed to win. Just barely.
A hint of a smirk appeared on Nikolai’s face. "Much better. You’re getting it."
A spark of pride flickered inside me, but I quickly buried it. "What’s lesson two?"
He leaned back in his chair, gathering the cards into a neat pile. "Lesson two: Lies."
Just the mention of the word sent a chill racing down my spine.
"Your father built his empire on deceit," Nikolai went on. "He tells people what they want to hear, hides what they fear, and uses that to ensnare them. If you want to beat him, you need to learn to do the same."
