He just sat there, tie loosened, one hand draped over his knee, watching me like he was memorizing something.
“What?” I asked.
He shrugged. “You looked effortless to me.”
I snorted and leaned back against the seat, head tipped toward the window.
The city passed by in a wash of lights, neon signs, red signals, the occasional cab, I watched them for a second, then turned back to him.
“You know this is the part,” I said softly, “in every fake relationship story... where one person screws up and actually falls.”
Michael didn’t flinch. His eyes didn’t flick away.
