“Thank you. I should get going; Rachel is waiting for me.” She nodded, though her eyes lingered on mine a second too long, there was a faint, lingering shadow in them. I headed toward the pediatric wing. As I stepped into Fiona’s room, I found Rachel propped up in the plush seat with her laptop balanced on a small pillow over her lap. I knew exactly what she was doing — trying to catch up on work even though I’d told her a dozen times she didn’t have to.
